Our 10-17s Lead

7th March 2025

In January, we said farewell to June as her and Geoff, her husband, decided to spend more time with family. Simon is the group’s new lead, having led it now for two months.

We thought it was time to get to know Simon a bit more and so we asked him a few questions.

A Few of My Favourite Things

What is your favourite food? My favourite food is slow cooked pork, apple and sausage.

What about your favourite movie? The movie Aliens, I must have watched in 10+ times!

What is your favourite discussion topic? I love talking about my garden!

What tops your bucket list? (meaning what do you really want to do) Trekking in Patagonia

What is a fun fact about you? I once told a member of the cast of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ that they couldn’t use a chair as it was reserved for my mum at a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.

Travel

If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go to? Antarctica

If you could go back to anytime in history, when would you travel to? 65 million years ago, the asteroid hit would be a spectacle!

Sky

What did you want to do when you were younger? Create computer games for a living

How did you find out about SKY? My neighbour Joan introduced me to the Tuesday group at Sky, I helped out and now I’m running it!

Why did you want to get involved at SKY? Because I’ve always wanted my work to help children, and I find it very rewarding on a personal level.

If you had the opportunity to redesign society, what would you change? I would remove all divisions in society and make it a collective societal goal to spread among the stars.

10-17’s Sports Day!

21st March 2022

We had such a wonderful evening last week at the sports hall, playing Basketball, Badminton, Football and with a parachute! Really good to burn off some energy together!

A massive thank you to Jess from Freedom Leisure for helping to set up this experience for our youth!

Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me …Or will they?!?!

10-17’s update: – Social Lifeskills Session

This week the group arrived to a special session, with our tables covered in plain paper. We watched a video called “Words That Hurt”, before encouraging our young people to have some healthy conversations about words they have heard that are not nice, bullying, and even how sometimes we can say mean things ourselves without meaning to!!

Once all these mean words (and describing pictures) were all on the paper, we then >>>> RIPPED IT UP!!! This was quite therapeutic for our young people!

A touching point was when one of our intelligent youth queried “Can we not look at how to be positive and kind instead?”, which set up our next activity beautifully.

We then did “Cards of Encouragement” for one another, filling cards with kind thoughts and encouragements for each other, resulting in some beautiful words and joy around the table. ?

10-17’s update

7th March 2022

We have had a fun-packed couple of weeks, including Laserquest in Half Term and Shrove Tuesday!

Laserquest: – The group had great fun at Laserquest, with 2 games, air hockey and lunch. Our group were amazing and handled the loudness, lights and experience very well!! Laughter and fun rang through the arena and the day highlighted how just how versatile our incredible youth can be when prepared.

Shrove Tuesday – Last Tuesday, we had a very tasty session!! We taught a little about why we eat pancakes, before encouraging our young people to shake up the batter and cook the pancakes. We made the pancakes in pairs and had a great time playing games, sewing and making dens while awaiting our turns. I must also say how incredible they were, even helping to wash the dishes afterwards. I must admit, our youth did so much better than I did!!! This also tested patience, but my group handled the frustration wonderfully. ( I’m blaming the electric cooker, for my lack of skill hahaha!! )

10-17’s update

17th February 2022

This last Tuesday, our 10-17’s had a wonderful session!! The group played a very large game of Connect 4 and had some fun with arts and crafts!

Connect 4

We also had a look at Shopping and Healthy Choices, learning to collaborate as a team to decide on a shopping list for the snack box. This was then put into action with a group walk to the Sainsbury’s Local and our young people paid for their snacks.
